China visa photo requirements

China visa photo requirements are strict, and photo problems are a common reason for applications being sent back. Here are the rules, and how we check your photo before your appointment.

Official China visa photo requirements

  • Size 33 mm wide by 48 mm high
  • In colour, taken within the last six months
  • Plain white background, no border
  • Full face, looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression and mouth closed
  • Head centred, with ears visible and no hair covering your eyebrows or eyes
  • No glasses, and no hat or head covering unless for religious reasons
  • No shadows, glare or red-eye

Common China visa photo mistakes

Off-white or grey backgrounds, shadows behind the head, glasses, hair over the face, smiling with teeth showing, and photos that are too small or cropped wrongly. Photo booth and high street photos made for UK passports don’t always meet the Chinese size rules.

How we help

Upload your photo when you apply and we check it against the rules before your appointment, so you don’t find out at the visa centre.
