What has changed?
British citizen passport holders can enter mainland China without a visa and stay up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges and transit. The policy currently runs until 31 December 2026.
Who still needs a China visa?
Anyone staying longer than 30 days, working, studying, reporting as a journalist or moving to China to join family. Trips continuing into 2027 may also need a visa unless the policy is extended. See every visa type.
What to carry at the border
Your passport, your return or onward ticket and details of where you’re staying. Border officers can ask to see them.
Is China visa-free for British citizens worth relying on?
For a one-off trip of up to 30 days, yes. Regular business travellers and anyone with trips planned for 2027 may still want a multiple entry visa for certainty. We’ll tell you honestly if you don’t need one.
